The Rāmāyaṇa is one of the great civilizational records of India. Its narrative preserves not only the lives and actions of Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa, but also an extensive geographical world—rivers and their confluences, mountains and forests, settlements and āśramas, routes of travel, distances between places, directions of movement, and the animals inhabiting different regions.
Read together, these descriptions constitute a geographical record of remarkable breadth.
Yet the geography of the Rāmāyaṇa has often been reconstructed by beginning with the modern map. Ancient names have been matched with places that bear similar names today, and the geographical descriptions of the epic have subsequently been interpreted within those modern locations. Such a procedure assumes that the physical geography of the Indian subcontinent has remained substantially unchanged throughout the enormous interval separating the Rāma era from the present.
The geographical reconstruction presented in this book proceeds in the opposite direction.
The ancient geographical record is reconstructed first; the modern landscape is brought in afterward.
This change in the order of inquiry is fundamental. A river is not identified merely because its modern descendant carries the same or a similar name. A mountain is not identified merely because a modern mountain bears the ancient name. A city is not established merely because tradition has preserved its name at a particular modern location.
The ancient geographical relationships must come first.
Where was the river?
What was its direction of flow?
With which rivers was it connected?
Where did those rivers meet?
What mountains stood nearby?
How far was one location from another?
What ecological environment surrounded it?
And, above all, what kind of physical landscape existed during the age described by the Sanskrit tradition?
Only when these questions are answered can the ancient geography be placed upon the modern earth.
The Chronological Landscape
The traditional chronology of Rāma places his life in Tretāyuga. Within the yuga chronology followed in this work, Rāma's era falls in the 24th Tretāyuga, approximately 18.14 million years ago.
The astronomical description of Rāma's birth in the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa provides a further chronological dimension. The text records Caitra śukla navamī, the Punarvasu nakṣatra, Karkaṭa lagna and the elevated positions of five planets. When these observations are interpreted through the astronomical concepts preserved in the Indian siddhāntic tradition, including planetary mandocca, they form an additional component of the chronological reconstruction presented here.
At such a chronological horizon, the physical geography of the Indian subcontinent was profoundly different from that of today.
The Himalaya was undergoing continuing uplift and deformation. Its foreland was occupied by evolving sedimentary basins and extensive river systems. Vast quantities of sediment were being transported from the rising mountain belt into the foreland. The Siwalik formations preserve a long record of these ancient fluvial environments, while geological investigations of the eastern Himalaya and Assam demonstrate that major drainage systems have repeatedly changed course, been captured, divided and reorganized through geological time.
The modern Indo-Gangetic Plain, in its present geomorphological configuration, therefore represents only the latest stage of a much longer geological history.
The rivers that we see today are not necessarily the rivers that existed in the Rāma era.
Their channels have migrated.
Their confluences have shifted.
Their drainage basins have changed.
Some channels have been abandoned.
Others have captured neighbouring drainage.
Former rivers have disappeared beneath younger sediments.
The geographical world of the Rāmāyaṇa must therefore be reconstructed as an ancient palaeolandscape.
The River-Centered Geography
The reconstruction begins with the rivers.
The opening journey of Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa during their exile establishes a remarkably coherent geographical sequence:
Sarayū → Tamasā → Gaṅgā → Prayāga → Yamunā → Bharadvāja → Citrakūṭa.
This sequence provides the first geographical framework of the exile.
The Sarayū establishes the starting river system. The Tamasā marks the first stage of departure. The journey then reaches the Gaṅgā and proceeds to Prayāga, where Rāma explicitly recognizes the saṃbheda—the meeting of the waters—of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā.
The Sanskrit account is exceptionally precise:
“nūnaṃ prāptāḥ sma saṃbhedaṃ
gaṅgā-yamunayor vayam”
“We have surely reached the confluence of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā.”
The text therefore does not merely provide two river names. It establishes a physical relationship between them.
From this geographical meeting point, the journey continues toward Bharadvāja's āśrama and then toward Citrakūṭa. Bharadvāja identifies the mountain as ten krośas from his āśrama:
“daśakrośa itas tāta
girir yasmin nivatsyasi”
“Ten krośas from here, O dear one, is the mountain where you shall dwell.”
Citrakūṭa is then described as a sacred and beautiful mountain, frequented by great ṛṣis and associated with Golāṅgūlas, Vānaras and Ṛkṣas.
These statements create a chain of geographical relationships:
river → confluence → āśrama → measured distance → mountain → forest ecology.
This chain is more important than the survival of any individual modern place name.
The ancient landscape is reconstructed from the entire network.
The Ancient Himalayan–Foreland River System
The geological history of the Himalayan foreland provides a remarkable framework for understanding this river-centered geography.
In 1919, E. H. Pascoe and G. H. E. Pilgrim independently advanced a major reconstruction of the ancient drainage of the Himalayan foreland. Pascoe called the great ancient river the Indobrahm, while Pilgrim referred to the corresponding system as the Siwalik River.
Pascoe envisaged a great river whose headwaters included the ancient Brahmaputra system of Assam and which flowed westward along the Himalayan margin toward the northwestern part of the subcontinent. In his reconstruction, the great longitudinal drainage system was subsequently broken up through the development and headward capture of other river systems.
The importance of this geological reconstruction is profound for the geography presented in this book. It demonstrates that the Himalayan foreland can no longer be regarded as having possessed, throughout geological time, the same independent Indus, Gaṅgā and Brahmaputra drainage configuration visible today.
Instead, the ancient foreland contained large and evolving drainage systems whose relationships changed as the Himalaya rose, the foreland subsided, sediment accumulated and rivers progressively captured or abandoned one another.
Modern geological research in the eastern Himalaya has further revealed complex palaeodrainage histories involving the Yarlung, Siang, Lohit and other major river systems, together with subsequent tectonic disruption and river capture.
The ancient eastern Himalayan landscape was therefore not a static boundary between mountains and plains. It was a dynamic river-producing and river-modifying environment.
Within this geographical setting, the ancient Sarayū and the northern river network described in the Rāmāyaṇa can be understood as components of a much older Himalayan–foreland drainage architecture.
The Eastern and Northeastern Geography
This reconstruction naturally restores the eastern and northeastern regions to their proper geographical importance.
The northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent was not an isolated geographical appendage. It occupied a crucial position at the meeting of the eastern Himalaya, the Brahmaputra region, the Indo-Burman ranges and the extensive foreland environments extending westward along the mountain front.
The ancient river systems of this region formed part of a much larger palaeohydrological landscape.
The Sarayū, in this reconstruction, belongs to that ancient river architecture. Ayodhyā is situated within the corresponding river corridor, while the subsequent movement toward the Gaṅgā and the Gaṅgā–Yamunā saṃbheda carries the geographical sequence westward through the ancient foreland.
Thus the early exile journey is not represented as an arbitrary line across the modern map. It follows the logic of an ancient river system.
The geography proceeds from river to river, from confluence to confluence, and from the river plains toward the mountain and forest landscape of Citrakūṭa.
This river-centered structure is the foundation upon which the subsequent geography of the exile is built.
The Ancient Forest World
The geography of the exile does not end with the northern rivers.
After Citrakūṭa, Rāma enters the great forest world of ancient India. The Araṇya Kāṇḍa records extended residence within forests, movement between āśramas, encounters with diverse communities and animals, and progressive movement through a landscape very different from the cultivated plains of the north.
The Daṇḍakāraṇya therefore has to be understood as a geographical and ecological region rather than merely as a name transferred onto a modern political map.
Its forests, rivers, mountains and settlements together define the landscape through which Rāma moved.
The palaeoecological record of the Himalayan foreland and eastern regions provides evidence of extensive ancient forest environments, including tropical vegetation and diverse animal communities. The fossil record of extinct proboscideans and other large mammals further demonstrates that the biological landscape of ancient India differed substantially from that of the present.
The four-tusked elephants described in the Rāmāyaṇa are consequently part of the ecological geography of the narrative. The Sanskrit description of caturdanta elephants belongs to a world in which extinct forms of large proboscideans inhabited landscapes that no longer survive in their ancient condition.
Geography and ecology thus become inseparable.
Pañcavaṭī and the Southern Transition
The movement toward Pañcavaṭī marks another major geographical transition.
Here the river, forest and mountain descriptions must again be read together. The identity of the ancient Godāvarī cannot be established simply by pointing to the modern river bearing that name. Its relationship to Pañcavaṭī, the surrounding forest, the mountains and the route followed by Rāma must first be established from the Sanskrit geographical record.
The same principle governs the identification of every major location in the epic.
The ancient name is the beginning of the inquiry.
The geographical relationship is the evidence.
The physical landscape is the final object of reconstruction.
From the Northern Rivers to the Wider World
The geography of Rāma's exile therefore unfolds as a continuous geographical narrative.
It begins with the northern river system:
Sarayū → Ayodhyā → Tamasā → Gaṅgā → Prayāga → Yamunā → Bharadvāja → Citrakūṭa.
From Citrakūṭa it expands into the great forest regions.
From the forest regions it proceeds toward Pañcavaṭī and the geography of the Godāvarī.
From there the narrative opens into the wider world of the southern and eastern cultural communities, the Vānara geographical sphere, the great search routes, the oceanic region and Laṅkā.
Each stage introduces new geographical relationships while retaining connections with the preceding landscape.
The resulting geography is therefore not a collection of isolated identifications. It is a single interconnected geographical system.
Reading the Ancient Landscape
The purpose of this book is to recover that system.
The Sanskrit texts provide the geographical observations.
Traditional chronology provides the temporal setting.
Astronomy contributes an independent chronological dimension.
Geology reconstructs the changing physical framework of the subcontinent.
Palaeohydrology reveals the history of rivers and drainage systems.
Palaeontology illuminates the animal world.
Palaeoecology reveals the forests and environmental conditions.
Archaeology and cultural geography contribute evidence concerning human settlement and movement.
These disciplines are not being used to replace the Sanskrit geographical record. They are brought together to illuminate the physical world in which that record was formed.
The resulting picture is of an India whose geography has changed profoundly through geological time.
The rivers of the Rāma era belonged to an older drainage architecture.
The mountains stood within an actively evolving Himalayan system.
The foreland was shaped by sedimentation and tectonic movement.
The forests covered landscapes now occupied by very different ecological systems.
Animals described in the epic belonged to biological communities that have subsequently disappeared or changed.
And settlements that once stood beside ancient rivers may today be separated from those rivers—or from their original geographical setting—by thousands or millions of years of landscape evolution.
The modern map is therefore not the starting point of this investigation.
It is the endpoint of the geological history that followed.
The geography of the Rāmāyaṇa lies beneath it.
This course seeks to bring that ancient geography back into view—river by river, mountain by mountain, forest by forest, and journey by journey—until the route of Rāma emerges not as a line imposed upon a modern atlas, but as the geographical landscape preserved in the Sanskrit tradition itself.
